CANTERBURY.
Accident.-—An accident of a serious naturehappened yesterday, Jan. 30, toa.young female in Colombo street by the name of Harriet Douglas. It seemed that whilst sitting by the fire and reading to her sister her drapery accidentally ignited, and before assistance could be procured and the flames extinguished she was most fearfully burnt. Drs. Turnbull and Hilson were promptly in attendance but we much fear from the nature of the injuries received that medical skill will be of no avail.— Standard.
Crosbie Ward, Esq., has been elected a member of the House of Representatives for the Town of Lyttelton. Thomas Rowley, Esq., was also returned as member to the Assembly same day for the district of Ellesmere. In neither instance was there any show of opposition.—-/^.
