HAWKES' BAY.
(From the Uawkes' Bay Herald.) On Thursday, November 22, the overland mail arrived from Auckland, via Otawhao. A private letter to hand by this opportunity from a resident at the latter place is to the effect that a native messenger had just arrived from Waiknto from Taranaki, who reported that on the day of his departure, (JNov. 10), another battle was being fought. No particulars given. The same correspondent mentions that the Waikatos engaged on the 6th admit their defeat; they acknowledge a loss of 37 men besides wounded, but maintain, as usual, that a far larger number of soldiers fell in the contest. The news of this engagement had reached Waikato, but it had led to no feeling of discouragement; on the contrary, fresh levies of raeii were to proceed to the scene of hostilities. Our Churches.—lt will be seen from our advertising colums that tenders aio now invited fur the erection of the Church of England. Part of the timber is on the ground for the Presbyterian Church; and it is hoped that both places of worship will be ready for use by April next—certainly at all events, before another wiater sets in*
