Correspondence.

To the Editor of the Colonist.

THE NELSON EXAMINER, GOVERNOR

BROWNE, AND MR. STAFFORD. Sir—As reference has been made by your contemporary to promises or opinions given at the hustings so long ago as 1856, and as it has been inferred that electors might wish to be reminded of the exact nature ot the same, it would perhaps be as well to remember, while questioning the fitness of any of our representatives, that within half that time, namely, on January 29th, 1858, the Nelson Examiner's leading article contained the following, paragraph :— ;

"As to our Governor, we are unable to connect " his name with a single act of statesmanship since "he came to New Zealand; and the Prime "Minister, Mr. Stafford, has fallen into such " thorough discredit, from Ms apparent apathy " and exclusive devotion to the redtapestical pro"prieties of office, that were he now to offer himself "for re-election in Nelson, we really believe he "WOuld NOT POLL A SCOHfi OF VOTES."

Now.tljis was either so really expressive of the actual state of things' (and therefore completely at variance with the general course and policy of such journals), or some strong motive existed for altering the opinion thus given; for three days after—not four years—the ' Senior Proprietor' dissents entirely from the Editor, and declares that he holds contrary-opinions! ; • \ ■''"'■■ I am, &c^, Auso an Elector. December 6,1860.

\ To tlie Editor of the Colonist.
