THE CQLQNIST. NELSON, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1860.
On Sunday morning the Lord Ashley arrived from' Sydney with the English mails, after a stormy passage of eight days. By her we receive European intelligence to the 26th cf September; our Sydney dates are to the 16th instant. The Airedale, which arrived in the afternoon of the same day, brought southern files and Taranaki papers by way of Wellington to the 17th instant; from these we cannot extract any important items of news, the contents being chiefly amplifications of what has been already given with respect to the action at Mahoetahi. We are however glad to find that the wounded on our side are going on well and evince every token of recovery. Eleven more bodies of natives were found, making the enemy's loss amount to forty* five, although it has been said, on the authority of friendly natives, to amount to an admitted loss of upwards of seventy, many having died at Huirangi and before reaching there. On this road the body of J. Hawken, contract butcher for the camp, was found on the 10th instant. He was supposed to be searching for the enemy's dead, when a volley was fired, which killed his horse, and before > he,'could extricate himself, Tamihana is said to have tomahawked him. On the 13th the Niger and Victoria left with 400 of the troops for strengthening Auckland; and should any reprisals be attempted bythe rebels for the losses they have lately sustained, each place will be sufficiently prepared for any sudden emergency; the disposal of the forces being regulated bythe point at which such an; attack may be made.
We have heard thatia native from Taranaki reached here by the former trip of the Airedale, and proceeded at once to Wakapuaka; the object of his visit we know not.
