POLICE COURT.

[Before B. Walmsley, Esq., Police Magistrate.] Furious Riding.— James Moore was summoned by Constable Harper (acting chief constable,) for furiously riding on the Haven Road, on Thnrsday, 22nd inst., thereby endangering the lives of her Majesty's subjects. . J. Poynter, Esq., R.M., swonr—l. was proceeding homewards on Thursday eveningiasfiivcbinpany with Mr. Kerr; we had got as far as Mr. Strong's store, when i saw a man coming along the road in full gallop ; I was meditating which side of the road I should go to get out of his way, when he immediately drew up opposite Hudson's public-house. He stopped a few seconds at the door, but I could not make out who he was. He then turned his horse round and proceeded towards Green Point in a canter. Mr. Kerr and myself then proceeded on the road, and we saw tho horse standing opposite Winterburu's door; I then perceived it was Moore, who was then taking a nobbier. I stood on one side and saw him start off at full tilt, which was all I saw of him. I considered it dangerous for him to be riding at that speed, particularly at night. Alex. Kerr, Esq., corroborated the former evidence, but did not know who the man was that was riding.

The Magistrate fined him £5, and lis. 6d. costs. Hobse Straying.— Charles Harley, John Percival, and Pratt and Scott were each fined in sums varying from 2s. 6d. to ss. for the above offence.

David Mackenzie appeared to answer the charge of assault on one Wm. Melville (alias Sydney Bill), at the Pelorous. The charge having been sustained, he was fined £3, and 6s. 6d. costs.

The Elections.—We are glad to find that electors for tho town have at length taken into consideration the necessity there is for some sympathy and integrity of purpose on the part of those whom they send forth as their representatives, and that the true intention of sending a representative of a community should not be so glaringly infringed as by the system hitherto in fashion of allowing only the representative of a class to occupy the position. A very numerously signed requisition will we hear be submitted to the Superintendent, J' p. Robinson, Esq., to stand for the town. The other probable members will be G. Parker Esq., for Motueka and A. Saunders, Esq., for the Waimea. W. L. Wrey, Esq., has signified his intention of standing for the representation of a district that possess such interests and pursuits as he has been identified, with-for many years, and calls for support from the electors of Collingwood. New Zealand Flax.—The Home News says:— New Zealand flax is held for stiff rates, which buyers show no disposition to give. Three tons ex Zealahdia were taken in; undressed _18, and dressed £22. Sitons and a half, ex Wild Duck, and six bales, ex C. Pemberton, were withdrawn. Native Affairs.—The Gazette of the 10th instant, notifies the resignation of the Honorable 0. W. Kichmond as minister for Native Affairs, and the appointment of the Honorable Frederick Aloysius Weld to that office.

South Down Sheep..—We hear that—Burt, Esq., has brought with him to Nelson, some valuable South Down Rams; two were lost on the passage by the Lord Ashley, but three have been landed in good condition They are from the stock of the Duke of Bichm'ond, and an attestation to that effect, under his signature, may be inspected by purchasers.
