VICTORIA JOCKEY CLUB.
SPRING KACE MEETING-.
This meeting, which commenced on the 25th ult., appears to have been of a satisfactory character, with fine weather and a good attendance of spectators. We abridge the account of the proceedings from Melbourne papers, kindly upplied us through Captain Ken sett of the Margaret Thompson:—
The first race of the day was for the New Grand Stand Stakes, and at starting Dauntless was decidedly the favorite at even against th* field. With regard to Phcebe and Wildrake, the betting had been hitherto even against them coupled. When Mr. Duppa's intention to ruu Wildrake alone became known a slight disposition to favor Dauntless still more became perceptible, while Buzzard's capacity as a four-year-old was considered so doubtful that 4 to 1 was freely betted against him. Falcon, who had been scarcely in the betting at all, was scratched. Nor were opinions changed when the three who did run came to the starting-post. The start was not at all satisfactory; and when, to the surprise of all except a chosen few who never lost their faith in him who prored the winner, Buzzard took the lead and kept it, those were neither few nor reticent of language who laid the blame at the starter's door. Before the race was over, Dauntless was out of it. The pace was hardly a killing one. THE GRAND STAND STAKES, Of 100 soys. Entrance, 5 soys. One mile and a half. Weight for age. Mr. W.
