MARLBOROUGH.
(From the Press.) Death by Burning.— An inquest was held on the body of Michael Connor, whojjwas discovered burnt to death in his own house at the Boulder Bank, Wairau.. The house was discovered to be on fire on Sunday morning the 22nd October, and on more persons going tothe spot, they found his body completely charred. The deceased was seen at work on the Saturday night, at half-past ten o'clock, quite sober. From a soldier's account book, the deceased was entered Michael Counor, of Kilrush, Newtown Barry,, Ireland; enlisted in the 86th Regiment at Dublin, on the 17th February, 1838, at the age of twenty years. The following verdict was returned;— " TLat the said Michael Connor was found dead and burned, amongst the ruins of his house, but whether his death was caused by burning, or by what means his house came to be on fire, there is not sufficient evidence before the jury to shew,"
. ■ Customs Revenue—The fallowing is the return of customs revenue of the port of Wairau for the quarter ended 30th June, 1860:—Spirits, £184 13s. 5d.; Tobacco, .£26 18a. 6d.; Wine, £9 Bs. Id.; Ale (bottled), Bs. 9d.; making a total of £224: 83. 9d. The return for the corresponding quarter of 1859 was j£lsl 3s.
Volunteers at Picton.—-Last Saturday (21st instant) a meeting was held at Picton for the formation of a lifle corps, when nineteen members were sworn in by Captain Kenny, and the following officers chosen;— Captain Kenny; first lieutenant, Mr. H. Broughton; second lieutenant, Mr. E. C. Morgan. Mr. F. G. Baillie was appoiuted secretary and treasurer; and Messrs.Campbell, Fuller, and Brown were added to the committee. The election of sergeaats and corporals is to take place when the corps has been sufficiently drilled to ascertain the most competent. Since the meeting several additional members have been sworn in and it is confidently expected that, the number will soon be greatly augmented.
MARiBQRQJJGH JOCKEY C/LUB.—-At a public meeting, convened by advertisement, and held at the Victoria Hotel, Blenheim, on Monday last; Mr. Henry, Godfrey in the chair; it was agreed to form a jockey dub, to be called "The Marlborough Jockey €lub." The club. having been formally constituted, the following resolutions were agreed to ■:—That the rules of the Nelson Jockey Club be adopted; That W. H. Eyes, Esq., be invited to act as Secretary and Treasurer; That theMarlborough Races be held on the 26 th and 27th days of December, 1860; the races to be held near Blenheim; That W. Adams, Esq. ba requested to act as judge; That Messrs. W.. Robinson, E. D.odsonj aod V. Hewitt be stewards. Those who are desirous of becoming members of the club are invited to signify their wish to join it to the secretary or any member.
