Correspondence

; ;. WISCONSIN. , , To the Editor of the Colonist. Sir—Perhaps the following extract from a letter just received from a friend in Wisconsin may interest some of your readers.—A.B. " I have been in America fourteen years, but I think of leaving for the following reasons:— " This country is filling up with Dutch, Norwegians, Irish, &c, many or whom are of the lowest class. Sunday balls and Sunday gambling are com- } m'only practised, so that many, both American and English, are disposing of their property to settle elsewhere. The climate is also very disagreeable, being extremely hot in summer, and fearfully cold in winter, the thermometer in summer rising as high as 103 degrees in the shade, and falling 40 degrees below zero in the winter. Last winter the mercury froze solid. "Another reason why I wish to leave is, the uncertainty of crops, owing mainly to the late frosts in spring. I know some farmers who have lost their farms through such failure. For "the same reason we cannot grow much fruit; even apples do not do well. . " I have a good farm of 400 acres, except for the above reasons. You have been a long time in New Zealaud ? and I thought you could give me some information respecting the country, and I should feel obliged if you would —especially upon climate, soil, water and v^ater power, how many bushels df grain to the acre, the price, what arrangements with regard to land, and its price per acre, &c." *
