Pigeon Shooting.—This well known, though by many not approved of English sport, seems to be a favorite pastime with our Australian friends. Our neighbors in Canterbury too have commenced this favorite sport of cockneys. We take the following from a Sydney paper :—' A match came off on Tuesday, at Homebush, for ,£SO aside, between Messrs. Redwood and Duppa, of New Zealand, and Mr. W. Blaxland and Mr. R. Jamison, M.L.A. Twenty-one birds each at twenty-one yards' rise. The former won easily. The following was the score :—Mr. Redwood, 19; Mr. Duppa, 15; total 34. Mr. Blaxland, 13 ; Mr. Jamison, 12; total, 25. Another match then took place between Mr. Reawood and Mr. Ryan of Penrith, for <£50 aside. Twenty-one birds, at thirty yards' rise. Mr. Redwood lost the match at his eighteenth bird, Mr. Ryan being four ahead of him at this time:—Mr. Ryan, 11; Mr. Redwood, 7. A scratch match was then shot for a sweepstakes of 10s. each ; nine members,five birds, at twenty-one yards' rise ; and was won by Mr. Moon who killed all his birds.' Aid for Taranaki.--At the weekly meeting of the Committee, the agent employed by the Committee to make a return of unoccupied dwellings in Christchurch and the neighborhood, sent in a list of 40 houses and cottages, varying from 2 rooms to 12 rooms in each. The Treasurer reported the subscriptions to have amounted to £I,l3o.— Canterbury Standard.
Accident. —On Sunday morning, September 23rd, a little girl, threa years of age, met with a serious accident from jumping off a small heap of straw near Mr. Jellyman's house, Stoke, which resulted in one of her legs being broken. Bad Roads.—We have just received information of a circumstance which might have been attended with serious consequences. As two gentlemen were riding in a carriage on the road near to Mr. Buxton's, Stoke, one of the horses got into a hole formed by the late rains, and tumbled down, but fortunately no damage was sustained. We beg to call the attention of the Country Road Board to the above. Nelson Land Society.—The monthly meeting of this Society took place last evening, when the sum of JglOO was disposed of for £8 10s. 6d. for eaoh <£50. The uext highest sum was £7:
