SYDNEY RACES.

SECOND CHAMPION SWEEPSTAKES.

The value of the stakes on this second great sporting occasion at Sydney amounted to' £1,700, and out of the sixteen nominations four represented New Zealand, New South Wales furnished six, and Victoria two, the remaining four—Archer, Bonnie Rose, Camden, and Mag-on-the-Wing,. being withdrawn. Flying Buck, who on the first occasion carried away the stake sans ceremonie, held a high place in the confidence of the public, and trust in tlie powers he had evidenced, together with the satisfactory appearance which he shewed on emerging from the saddling yaid, held him the favorite up to the last moment previous to the contest, the odds being only six to four agianst him, and but few takers aven then. The betting.at the start was—s to 1 against Veno, 10 to 1 against Zoe, 15 to 1 against Gratis, 100 to 6 against Wildrake, Young Morgan, and the Don, and 12 to 1 against Mr. Hargreaves's Deception, who it will be remembered shewed herself well named by her performances on the Nelson turf last year. About three o'clock the great trial race took place, an excellent start having been affected. The following is the order in which they paised the chair at the end of the race :— The Second Australian Champion Stakes of 100 soys each, half forfeit, with 500 soys. added. The.secoud horse to teceive 200 soys. out of the stakes, if three start, or save his stake if only two start. The third horse to receive 100 soys. Three miles. New South' Wales weight for age. An allowance of 3 lbs. to all horses arriving from parts beyond the colony within two months from the date of the race, and a further allowance of 2 lbs. if they are i maidens. | J. The Don s 9 st. 4 lb. now began to tell upon him, together with the fast cutting out he had made, anl he was compelled to resign his forward position, not again to recover it. By this time eager eyes were cast to watch the work of Flying Buck, and ',' Where's the Buck?' was the cry, as the horses passed the stand a second time witii Zoe, Wildrake,' Strop, and Deception in the van, the favorite of the meeting not shewing np favorably by any means. The excitement now grew iv-! tense, the conqueror of the first occasion, the almost absurdly triumphant principal in the former "colt hunt,'' was done, coming in tenth! and amidst vociferous cheering the closing contest amongst the other horses took place, Zoe first ly about two lengths, Wildrake sesond, Veno beating Deception in the race for third place. Time 6. . mm. 1 sec. The veteran Strop having contended; nobly for the race, fell down dead at the finish, having burst a blood vessel. The game old horse died as became his plucky nature and successful career—with harness on this back Mty Mr. Redwood speedily find another to fill his place as worthy to occupy the succession as the owner of the departed Strop is deserving of. We hear that public opinion instantly, and uuaniraously voted a grave beneath the winning-post to the veteran three- miler.
