NELSON BUILDING, LAND, AND INVESTMENT SOCIETY.

The first annual meeting of this Society took place at the Fleece Hotel, on Saturday evening, September 1st; Oswald Curtis, esquire, in the chair. The Chairman, in his usual clear manner, made some observations on the success of the Society and on the benefit which all its numbers, would ultimately derive from it. Report was then read and adopted: REPORT. In presenting their first annual report your Committee have .much pleasure in being able to congratulate you upon the success which has attended the Society siqce its formation.,, * 510 shares have been taken since the commencement of the Society, of which only 11 have become forfeited, leaving 499 shares now, held by 210 members, representing £24,950. During the past year _ 36 shares have been realised, for which bonuses have been given, averaging £6 19s. 3d. per share of £50. The cash received amounts to the sura of £1641, of which £1530 9s. has-been, appropriated to the payment of the 36 realised shares, £99: 135. lOd. in payment of the preliminary and.management expenses, including advertising, printing, rules,. &c, and the residue £10 17s. 2d. remains in hand. The amount of arrears including fines is £52 12s. 5d. due to the Society. Although the expenses incurred during the first year may appear to amount to a considerable sum, yet it must be observed that after the payment of all liabilities there remains a balance, of £31 5s. 11d. from the funds set apart for that purpose. It is unnecessary that your Committee should point but to you any of the advantages which this Society offers, as it must be evident to all, that whilst it confers a* great benefit upon those who may realise their shares, .it also yields a large re-, turn to those who only deposit their money for investment. The profits of the Society' for the year amounting1 to £33 per centum upon the amount paid up, besides a large' surplus from the management funds. , ' The Committee for the present year are: -Messrs. Adams, Burn, Burns, Greenfield, Hackworth, Rout, Smallbone, Thornton, Tucker. Auditors—Messrs. Bury, Black, Webster. Secretary—Mr. John Percy.

Crew of the Pride of the Isles.—We are happy to announce that the crew of the above ' vessel, the account of the wreck of which appeared in our columns a few days since, arrived by the Airedale from Taranaki.

Refugees.—Wo publish the names-of the passengers who arrived by the Airedale yesterday\ morning, being sixty-one adults and one hundred and twelve children; this is however slightly imperfect, as some of the persons named in the passengers' way-bill have not arrived. Mr. Moore, Mr. Atkinson and wife, Mr. Lawrence wife and five children, Mr. Rogers wife and three children, Mr. Pepperell wife and four children, Mrs. Billing and two children, Mrs. Godfrey and four children, Mr. Julien and wife, Mr. Cowling wife and three children, Mr. H. Mathieson, Mr. Scandlyn wife and one child, Mrs. Scandlyn and four children, Mrs. Peperhill and two children, Mr. J. Rumbold wife and four children, Mrs. Hall and five children, Mrs. Wakefield and three children, Miss Wakefield, Mrs. Peaon and four children, Miss E. Hall, Mrs. Harrison and eight children, Mr. Castro, wife and five children, Mrs. Northcote and three children, Mrs. French and five children, Mr. Jury, wife arid six children, Mr. Leveridge, wife and five children^ Mr. Sarten, Mr. Moyle, Mr. Goodwin, Mr. Pratt, Mr. Nelson, Miss Rogers, Miss Kenacky, Mrs. Jones and two children, Mrs. Ginger and three children; Mrs. Walker and six children, Mrs. Simpson, Mr Jones, Mrs. Simpson and eight children,, Mr. Crunn and- wife, Mrs. Cran and one child, Mrs. Vereall and three children, Mrs. Ford and five children, Mrs. Saul and four children, Mr. Hall and four children, Mr. Davidson, Mr. Leith, Mr. Smith, Mr. Survey, Mr. Tate, Commissariat. The George Henderson.—This brig went ashore on the sandy beach north of the mouth of the Henui river.-. A rope,was sent on shore, and with the assistance of a large party of (Jommodoie Loring's blue-jackets the crew were safely landed. The wreck was during the night protected by and volunteers from the depredations which lappeared to be intended by the enemy, and, sub-: sequeritly, cartii were brought up and her cargo of timber, spars, cannons, and running riggings were saved.. During this scene Lieutenant M'Kellar Jmd Mr. Ephraim Coad were fired at, the latter (a volunteer) being killed, the former escaping unhurt. Richmond.—To-morrow the Odd Fellows Anniversary will be .celebrated at the Richmond Institute; dinner on the table at five o'clock. The Speaker of the Provincial Council will preside on the occasion. The funeral of Mr. Thomas Kite took place at Richmond, on Friday 24th August; it was attended by nearly one hundred persons. Sudden Bereavement. —We record the death of the wife of Mr. Way, with much regret for the serious losses in this family within the short space ofafevv days. We before noticed the death of two of the children under most painful circumstances in quick succession. Yesterday morning the mother unexpectedly succumbed to the severe grief occasioned by the death of her children. Her age was not more than 33 years. Of the two remaining children, one was attacked with diptheria, but has since recovered.
