RUSSIA, TURKEY, AND ENGLAND
It has. Been announced, that at St. Petersburg' the principal members' of the diplomatic corps, with the exception of the Turkish; minister, were a few days'since convoked by" Prince Gortschatoff, who declared-that the position of the Christians in Turkey had become so intolerable that Russia-was oh the point of addressing strong representations to the Ported in favor of tbem, arid hoped to obtain'the assent of the otber Powers. Crampton, immediately protested against thedntentions declared by Russia.,, ; !,'A telegraphic despatch from St. Petersburgh ,dated a day later than- the; above modifies the announcement that, Sir J. Crampton has protested against the proppsitiou of Russia for a Conference" on the state of Turkey, and says it is not a! *k'protest," but'an attitude of " reserve," which the English repreXentative has thought, fit to adopt with regard to'the Russian pro-, posal,'which he has refused to entertain until he should have received instructions joncerning it from home. -
