PROCLAMATION.
Whep p eas, it i 3 desirable that persons haying firearms, or other weapons in tneir possession'should, 4 _ organise'lhemselves, or enable others to do so, for the defence of the province in any possible emergency i all persons are hereby requested to register such arms or weapons at the office of the Resident '. Magistrate, stating what weapons they intend to reserve for their own use, and what number, if >, any, they are willing to place at the disposal of the Government, on security being given them for.. the return of the same, or Payment for them, if necessary. It should also be stated what amount - of ammunition the owners of 'such weapons have at command, in order that proper supplies may be. obtained and distributed. The Superintendent at the same time wishes, it } to be understood that, from the best information in the possession of Government, no ground whatever exists for any apprehension of danger to - this settlement from any hostile movements or in- ' tentions of our own or other natives. He there— - fore trusts that the friendly feelings which .has /,. existed Tor so large a number of years between the , , two races in this- province will not be interrupted , by credence being given, to reports prejudicial to the character of the few natives resident amongst us, and who, we have', no reason to doubt, view with disapprobation, the conduct of the Taranakt •'\ Rebels.
