THE EXHIBITION OF 1862.

(Fiomthc Age.) Whether this i 3 ever to be in a reality remains to be seen. Europe in arms, and England increasing her activity in preparing for \yar, are facts'that do not seem to point towards that peaceful condition of the world which should render another "Great Exhibition " worthy of all nations. Nevertheless the idea has been mooted, and while Sir William Armstrong at Woolwich, is pre; aring engines of war, Sir Thomas Phillips, in the Society of Arts, is defining his project for an exposition ofthe works of peace. Which of the two will occupy most of the public attention two years hence isa question, upon, which much turns. '■ If Sir Thomas should be successful in carrying out his design, Australia must soon begin to prepare the way for a display of her resources in Hyde Park, and under any circumstances it will not do for her to lose sight of the proposal—not, even in reliance on the Times, which seems rather to foretell that Sir William Armstrong's skill will, be most in request. "For," says that authority, »if ever there was an ill-chosen moment for the organisation of an enterprise which assumes peace, as its basis, and requires peace for its fulfilment, it is the present epoch of the world's history.". Perhaps this single sentence is of" more valueas indicating the direction of opinion taken by the Time^, than all its essays on the complexities of European- politics and Anglo-Con-tinental relations.
