WAKEFIELD LITERARY INSTITUTION.

To the Editor of the Colonist. Sm,—An advertisement having: appeared in your columns for the last three numbers stating that the animal tea party with a, musical entertainment was to take place at Wakelield on Monday last, it behoves some person to give you an account of it in the absence of a reporter, which would have been much better received by the public generally than any private critic's report; but it is not with any feeling of that description that I communicate to you. The Committee requested Mr. Saxton to preside, who kindly accepted the invitation. After eulogising the building, the^ Chairman stated,, from a report duly prepared, that a sum of £226115. lOd. had keen expended on the land, building, and fittings; that the library contained above 600 volumes of the best standard works.; and that the balance in hand of the Institution showed £Vi ss. shd. ; the increase of members during the last year numbered 13. This has not been all done by the district, but by the assistance of Government, and grateful the committee felt for that aid, and they flatter themselves that the money has not been expended improperly. The tea-party went off as usual upon those occasions ; the viands {ham sandwiches, cake, and bread and butter) were in abundancje, and everybody partook to their fancy. Of the musical entertainment much imight be «aid in passing encomiums on.Mr. Knyvett and his kind supporter Mrs. Greenfield; suffice it to say that it was really good. His pupils, acquitted themselves ably in choruses to two of his aongs, and the whole thing passed off very well, the audience encoring several times. The Chairman made some allusions to his homo visit, which were produced by, the; fiongu, and of course were very apropos. ', , The wind-up of the evening was' the National Anthem, in which all joined heartily. I aui, &c, J. T. S. Wa'keneldj .^auf ary 5.
