CRICKET MATCH.

We were happy to observe the good feeling that appears to exist between Captain Gracroft^ and his men—that gentleJnaif (his.lady also) being present at the fii«t game, ami; appearing to enter into the hilarity of the occajsion with a zeals that must have added additional pleasure to those with whom the discipline of the service connects him under sterner aspects usually. _; ' <..-.■. ■■. Nelson y. Niger.—Yesterday the membjers of the Nelson Club tried their strength against the Niger representatives at another game of cricket, and proved too. much.for:their visitors, the score of two innings being more decidedly against the Sons of Neptune than that of the previous day with-the Mechanics' Club. They have shewn, however, that with a little practice they would be as formidable as would be desired; at least, we have much to thank them for, in the spirit of fun and amusement which their presence has instilled into us since their arrival The score is as follows;—

NELSON. ;

- Wakepielp Cbiq^T ( i)IATCH--rA match wil 1 come off on' Tuesday "next* oh the Wakefield ground,'.-■between .eleven of the players of that district, aqd the same number of. members from the Nelson Mechanics' Cricket' Club. As both 'sides have been in tolerable practice, this first match of 'the season between the two clubs,, will no doubt, i be worth witnessing,-'as on the previous occasion the match.between these two parties was a very ■ close one, and the Wakefield players have the r<? : ; membrance of that defeat to' make them, do their [ best on this occasion.- , I >..-.. ; * Gas,—Oh Wednesday evening last the presence of our visitor was most appropriately recognised by a display of gas at D>. Tatton's from the Pakaw.au.; coal The shop had been prettily decorated with flowers, and presented -a very gratifying sight/as his Excellency drove up to the door and expressed his satisfaction at thenexcellence; and brilliancy of the light,,which he considered to be equal to 'that of London gas. He thanked , Dr. Tatton for having afforded him an opportunity of witnessing it, and hoped, on his next .visit to Nelson, he should find it in general use throughout the city. The departure of his Excellency was the signal for a cheer from a great number of persons who had assembled on the spot. We may here notice that in addition to the .praise that is due to Dr Tatton for originating gas in Ne"w Zealand, it should be mentioned that his contributions towards the contents of the bottle which wasplaci-d under the stone of the College, were composed, of specimens of the products of this i6|and which, treated by his processes, assume an important place in the foreshadowing of what w,e may y,et accomplish for ourselves. We have not space in the present issue to enumerate those spe.cjinejns, but must refer to. our, next for a full account of them as" well as the rest of the day's proceedings.

Ball.—Oa Wednesday, evening last a ball was given to his Excellency-the Governor and the officers.of the-Niger,.at the Freemasons' Hall. There were 119 persons present, the ladies predominating in numbers,- and 'from either this being accidental or the - singular way ,in which' :lady members 'of families: were invited , without their recognised cavaliers or relatives being included, many, fair exotics were1 condemned to. appear as " wall-flowers" for the greater part of the evening. .-As a demonstration; however, of respect to our visitors; the ball ho doubt ah'swereji every purpose designed by the promoters of it, as that portion of the assembly appeared to give full zest to" the enjoyment, that the occasion,presented. ■ ' Serious Accident.—:On Tuesday last a very serious accident occurred to a man named Mason, while sinking a well- in Bridge-street. When at the depth of about 36 feet, whilst sending up a bucket of mud and water, by. some mishap the hook attached to the rope slipped off the bale of the'bucket and the contents fell on his head, inflicting'a frightfuful gash on the scalp. Medical aid was at once attained,, and the place sewed up, he is now goihg'on as favorably as can be expected.

Nelson Mechanics v. Niger.-—On Wednesday afternoon a match was got up between the, officers and men of H.M.S; Niger and the Nelson Mechanics' Club, in Mr. Lewthwaite's enclosure in Toi TpiValley. After one innings on each side the game was decided against the " blue jackets."
