NEW CALEDONIA.
The Thiebe, French frigate; from' New Caledonia, brings intelligence from that colony of considerable interest in this paj-t of. the world, more especially taking into consideration the present aspect of affairs in
Europe, . ...... . ; '....•■ The new Governor, His Excellency M. D'Saisett, arrived at Port de France on the 22nd ultimo, with a large reinforcement of troops. The seat of the' French colonial government in the Pacific, is transferred from Tahiti-to this new acquisition on the Australian coast. M, D'Saisett, on arrival, immediately established an encampment a few miles from the landing, and commenced the formation'of a military road through the Island, to Kanala. More troops are expected,,for the purpose, as is said, of completing the subjugation of the country. It is somewhat remarkable that a people so. warlike as the French should require, many soldiers to " subjugate" the miserable savages of New Caledonia* . : • ■•■■ Port de France, is said to be exhibiting a state of great bustle and'activity. Streets are being laid out, wharves and jetties are being formed, and warehouses are being built. Every encouragement seems to be offered, in this respect, for mechanics and citizen^ to settle in the colony of His Imperial Majesty, over the way. ' ' , A contract has been accepted for the service of.a monthly mail between Port de France and Sydney. MM. Lannoy and Bourgoing are the contractors, and they will employ two first-class clipper vessels — one to leave Sydney forty-eight hours after the arrrival of the European mail, and the
other to- leave New Caledonia ; pn .the 25th of each month. This -arrangement, will, doubtless, lead to a closer commercial connection between Sydney and the seat of French Government in the Pacific, and we should very much -regret anything that might interrupt so friendly a connection. It was known some months since that a new 'Governor, was expected at New Caledonia, arid that he was to have the rank "of: Governor-General in H. I. M. possessions in the Pacific. M. deSaisett appears'to be commencing his administration vigorously,, and it ; is to be hoped:that nothing will occur to distract the attention of his Excellency from his Imperial Master's present possessions.— Sydney. Empire, June 9.:
