WANGANUI.
From- the Wanganui Chronicle *we learn that . his Excellency the Governor with Mr. M'Lean and Capt. Steward, arrived at Wanganui on Saturday evening the 7th instant. On Tuesday his Excellency held an undress levee at the Rutland Hotel, which was attended by the principal residents of the town!' After the levee a deputation waited upon the Governor to ' obtain information on the subject of native land purchases. His Excellency informed the depu- : tation "that a considerable block had been pur- : chased from the Manawatu Maories, that he had strong hopes of getting a large block in the direction of Waitotara and Patea, and that ur-y gent instructions had been given to all the officers of the land department to press forward the work of purchasing and offering for sale all land to -which an undeniable title had been secured." On Wednesday evening his Excellency was entertained at a public dinner by the inhabitants at Wanganui. The Wanganui Chronicle adds that an instalment was paid on that day towards the purchase of the Waitotara block, and that a preliminary survey will be im« mediately commenced.
