A Public Apology.—There has been much needless gossip with respect to the unpardonable fooleiy that consigned the pile driving machine to the bottom of the Maitai, and certain persons were summoned for the offence. To give: their names would, however, only increase the evil, and we mention it only to call attention to an apology among our advertisements for the unwarrantable liberty taken, and also to express a hope that the real perpetrators will be discovered and severely punished.
Wairau.—The accident that occurred to the daughter of Mr. Adam Jackson, of Omaka district, we much regret to say, has ended fatally. His eldest daughter, named Mary, aged about sixteen, had mounted a horse on a man's saddle, and being unseated, Was dragged along some distance, receiving severe injuries on the head. After lingering in a state of insensibility for a fortnight, the poor girl breathed her last on Sunday, the 10th instant, to the irreparable loss of her bereaved parents. Cricket.—On Friday next, there will be a match played on the Toi-toi ground between eleven married and eleven single players out of the Nelson Mechanics' Club. The dinner that they play for will come off at Mr. Lewthwaites, Wakatu Hotel, on Easter Monday.
