OTAGO.
We have papers from Otago to the Bth instant. The Colonist complains of the cavalier style iv which the province is treated by the General Government. The following introduces the present cause of grievance:— : " We understand that arrangements.-have been made for the erection of buildings for the Supreme and District Courts,.and for the various offices connected with the administration of justice. It is also intended, we believe, to hold the Provincial Sittings in the same building. All this is to be done under the direction and control of the General Government: all that the province will have to do in the matter will be to pay the piper. No one for a moment can deny tho urgent necessity for the erection in question ; at the same time, seeing that the needful must come out of the funds of the province, we think it only fair that those who find fha money should have some little voice iv the mutter." The Witness complains of the little accommodation offered by the Coleman steamers.. The Lord Ashley on her last trip having nnly afforded them a few hours to get their European and provincial correspondence written :— " The steamer Lord Ashley arrived here on Thursday, but without the English January mail, it not having arrived at Melbourne up to the 15th ult., on which day the mail steamer Boomerang left for Wellington. The Lord Ashley returned to the north on the same evening, the mail for her having at three o'clock in the afternoon. Alihounrh she only brought a colonial mail, her brief Rtay at this port has given rise to considerable dissatisfaction. Her inward mail only arrived at the Post, OffiVe between 11 and 12, and the outward mail was made up again at three o'clock, thus allowing only a few hours to receive au;l answer correspondence. We admire despatch—but this must be considered rather a sort of electrical despatch, which is by no means convenient, or affording advantage to the mercantile portion of our community, who will no doubt justly conclude that this racing communication is not that which is best suited to their requirements.
