(From the Sydney Herald.) _ [by electric telegraph] MEMO. OF LATEST INTELLIGENCE BY THE COLUMBIAN. (From our Queensclifj-e Correspondent.) Tenders for the new Mail Contract were to be received on the sth October last. The following are the principal conditions : Monthly, via Gibraltar, Malta, Suez, calling at King George's Sound, Kangaroo Island, and Melbourne —out and home. Contractors to supply no less than six vessels between Suez and Sydney, to commence first packet from Sydney with mails of February, and from England with mails of March. Mails must be conveyed to and from Sydney. Return via Straits Gibraltar, within a period of (55) fifty-five days ; an interval of not less than six days at Sydney be allowed between arriving and departure. An intimation was attached to the Government notice that tenders would shortly be called for a second montly mail, via Panama. Arrangement with the Royal Mail Company had been made for an extension of two months. The Atlantic Telegraph was inarticulate. Experiments were making with the hope of discovering the nature and position of the flaw. It was stated at Suez that a telegram had been received announcing the death of Lord Palmerston, but the Simla, which left three days after the Columbian, brought no confirmation of the report.
