NEW ZEALAND COMPANY.
At an adjourned annual general meeting of the Court of Proprietors of the New Zealand Company, held at the Company's House, in Broad-street-buildings, London, on the 10th of June, Ross Donnelly Mangles, Esq.,, M.P., in the chair, the following• resolutions were severally moved, seconded, and unanimously adbpted, viz.:— -
1. That the report and accounts now read be adopted.
2. That the following gentlemen be re-elected directors of the Company,, viz.:—Alexander Currie, Esq., William Hutt, Esq., M.P., and George Lyall, Esq., M.P.
3. That the Court of Proprietors desires oh this occasion to express its sense of the obligation which every member of the Company lies under to all, whether members of the government, of the. direction, or others, by whose aid has been effected the arrangement embodied, 'in 1857, in the act for discharging the claims of the New Zealand Company on the proceeds of waste lands in New Zealand, 20, and 21 Victoria, c. 52
With this resolution the court desires to associate the name of Ross Donnelly Mangles, Esq., M. P. 4. That the Court of Proprietors desires to express its sense of the extent to which every member of the Company is indebted to all, whether members, of'the government, of the direction, or others, by whose aid was effected the arrangement embodied, in 1847, in the act to promote colonisation in New Zealand, and to authorise a loan-to the New Zealand.Company, 10 and 11 Victoria, c. 112.
With this resolution the court desires to asssociate the name of John Abel Smith, Esq., M.P.
. 5. That the Court of Proprietors cannot separate, perhaps for the last time, without placing on record the fact that, at a juncture when the British government had declared its fixed intention not to admit New Zealand within the pale of the empire, and when the French government was promoting measures for annexing ifc to that of France, the New Zealand Company came forward, and by timely and vigorous exertions caused those valuable islands to be occupied on behalf of the British Crown,-and to be regularly colonised by British subjects.
With this resolution the court desires to associate the name of William Hutt, Esq.. M.P. 45. That the Court of Proprietors cannot contemplate the final severance of the New Zealand Company from the settlements it has established, without expressing its cordial concurrence in the sentiments on this subject contained in the report it has just adopted, its undiminished interest in the well-being of each of these settlements, and its sincere good wishes for the prosperity and happiness of every member of every community, whether established by the company or otherwise, that forms a portion of the United Colony of New Zealand.
With this resolution the court desires to associate, as the son and representative ofthe-Deputy-Chairman of the New Zealand Company of 1825, the name of George Lyall, Esq., M.P.
7. That the proprietors of the New Zealand Company not in the direction, beg to express at this, which is probably the last meeting of the Company, their entire approbation of the conduct, great ability, and eneygy, in every respect and at all times, displayed by the Directors of the Company, and that it is mainly owing to such conduct, ability, and energy; that the affairs of the Company have been brought to the satisfactory state in which they now are. 8. That great as have been the difficulties experienced by the Company in various stages of its career, the thanks of the proprietors, are especially due to. the members of the present direction, tor .the successful termination to which the affairs, of the Company have been conducted, and which the proprietors are this day assembled to acknowledge.
9. That the proprietors of the New Zealand Company desire to place on record their very strong sense ofthe great value pf^the'services which have been rendered to the. Company, by its secretary, T. E. Harrington, Esq., and their high estimation of hi 3 ability and character, and that he be requested .to accept the sum of 1000 guineas as a testimonial of their respect and gratitude.
10. That the proprietors ofthe Company, concurring in the sentiments expressed by the directors in the report, with regard to Mr. Tattershail, request his acceptance ofthe sum of 300 guineas, as a mark of their, appreciation of his services.
