We have news to the 25th ultimo.
From the Age, Argus, and other papers we learn the following :— The Ministry have succeeded in carrying the Schedule of the Reform Bill nearly completed through the Assembly. -Mr. Fellows, Mr. Haines'Attorney-General and a member of the Assembly, is going to resign, and seek a seat in that quieter sphere—the Legislative Council. ;
Mr. GabreUi; the great capitalist, has propounded a monster scheme for developing by machinery, the hidden wealtli of the mines of Victoria. It is proposed to take in working partners or Shareholders. The capital is to be £i ,000,000. The .first issue of the ReV. T. Binney's sermon " Be Men,''was sold on, the day of publication. There was quite a rush for it. 4 The Rev. J. L.Poore, who nrrived recently by the Siiltana v is to .return to England by the present overland niail..' His1 mission is to bring out more ministers for the Independent denomination. Tlie unemployed are still availing themselves of the arrangements of the Government for their temporary relief, and notwithstanding the lowrate of remuneration,, about 200 men, most- of them with families, liav.e availed themselves of the opportunity afforded them of finding a loaf for their half-starving children. Very many have been rejected because Dr. Earley, the superintendent, of the Immigrants' Home, could not find tent accommodation for those who have lately applied. The remuneration at present given is four shillings a day. . It is understood that the Government have decided upon appointing Dr. Macadam to fill the post, of analytical chemist, vacant by the decease of Mi-. Maund. The appointment will give universal satisfaction.
Mr. Duffy has recovered froiri his recent indisposition. We understand that the cause of his illness was less attributable to ministerial and legislative labor than to tlie absolute worry of applicants for situations; • v-
The Solicitor-General was reported to have stigmatised.an act of the previous Ministry as " a very Jewish looking affair." lie was called to account by the leading Jews of the pity, whereupon he denied having used 4 he expression. It i 3 proposed to introduce a clause in the Reform Bill,before the Assembly to. give the Melbourne University power to send a member into the Assembly when a cerfain number of persons shall have taken degrees. The proposition is regarded with favor by the Argus, and it is expected it will be adopted. , Upwards of 30 tons of gold have been shipped during this year from the port of Melbourne.
