MILITARY TITLES
THE RIDDLE OF RANK. To the man in the street ah oflteer wearing a crown on his shoulder is merely a major, but to the War Office, or that part of the Wjar Office wfhich is busy preparing for the next peaie, he may be a second lietenant (temporary captain) (acting major), and when the war ends and the army can get back to some real osldiering, he will be a second lieutenant again. Here are two paragraphs from the London Gazette (writes a special correspondent) :—, iCaptain and brevet major (temporary major) (acting lieutenant-col-onel) H. Skinner to be temporary lieutenant-colonel (Jan. 1). Captain and brevet major (acting major) to be temporary major: H. Skinner (Dec. 3, 1939). Careful scrutiny will reveal that an intermediary phase of captain and brevet major (temporary major.) (actin glieutenant-colonel) Skinner's military career between 3rd December and Ist January is missing, namely, the promotion of captain and brevet major (temporary major) Skinner to the rank, or ranks, of captain and brevet major (temporary major) (acting lieutenant-colonel). In the same Gazette the department for promoting captains {temporary majors) (acting lieutenantcolonels) to the rank of captain (temporary major) (temporary lieutnantcolonel) recorded the following advancement:— Captain (0.M.E., 3rd class) temporary major (O.M.E. 2nd class) (acting lieutenant-colonel) (0.M.E., Ist class) H. D. Fry to be temporary lieutenant-colonel.
