Fallen tree blocks busy highway
A fallen tree blocked State Highway 5 about 15 miles north of Taupo for more than an hour on Sunday night.
First. reports reached Taupo police about 7 p.m. Motorists were still able to get past the tree, which covered about three quar- ( tdrs of the road's width. Warning lights were set up while New Zealand Forest - Products staff cut up the tree and removed it from the road. The highway was cleared by 8.30 p.m. There were several minor accidents in Taupo at the weekend, but only one person. was injured. A Taupo man is in a fair condition in Taupo Hospital after an accident in the early hours of Sa'turday morning. George Bilich, 22, was injured when his car hit a vvi're fence on Rotokawa Street about 4.45 a.m. The fence was wrecked and the' car slightlv damaged. In another accident early' on Saturday morning, a car hit a power pole on Gillies Avenue but the driver of the vehicle was not hurt. The accident happened at 12.25 a.m. and badly damaged, both the pole and the front of the car. Consumers in the area had their power cut off later in the morning while workmen repaired the pole.
