Visitor: S.A. just like N.Z.

South Africa is just like 'New Zealand and most other countries, ready to boom with development, says Mr Alfred Merrill who, with his wife, is visiting the district. Mr Merrill said that people should travel to other countries to see what is going on. He said that South Africa is really "opening up" in development. There is employment "available particularly for .skilled tradesmen, he said. ' Mr Merrill first travelled to South Africa during the Second World War as part of his Air Force duty. He liked the country and so

stayed on. Now partially retired, he was in business for himself in the butchery trade for many years. Mr Merrill said that the practice of apartheid was often all that was generally known about South Africa, and people often did not realise that it was a thriving country. He believes newspaper publicity on apartheid has been overplayed. He would like to encourage people to go and see for themselves and commented that travellers he met returning to New Zealand on the ship "Fairsky" had been surprised what they had found.
