Anger after ticket costs husband $40
A 32 - year - old Taupo bushman Vas fined $40, court costs $5, after pleading guilty before Mr B. S. Barry, SM, in fhe Taupo Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to a charge of assault. Senior-Sergeant R. Moncur said that on July 26 Hakaria Turetahi had been stopped by a traffic officer and issued vvith a ticket while driving with his wife "along Taharepa Road. When the traffic officer left, Turetahi became ^nnoyed and punched his wife in the head and face. She was struck in the head and face again when they arrived home. Neighbours heard her screams and called the police. She suffered bruises and a cut over the right eye. Turetahi strongly denied striking her and said in a ^police interview that she had hurt herself when getting out of the car. He said his wife had provoked the fight by throwing a bottle at hiiu. » "Leave your wife aione or you will find youself inside for six months," said Mr Barry. * * * Timothy James Carter, 26, married, bush contractor, was fined $60, Couurt costs $5, and was disqualified from driving for six months after pleading guilty to a dangerous -driving charge. On two further charges of driving a special heavy vehicle witbout a licence. "and driving an unregistered vehicle, he was fined $30. The Court was told that
on May 13, Carter had been driving a logging skidder from Taupo to Broadlands when a logging truck appeared in the other direction. Carter stopped the machine, blocking part of the highway. Another vehicle approaching from behind had to brake and swerve to the left to avoid a collision. The skidder had no lights or reflectors. Representing Carter, Mr P. L. Thomas said Carter had loaned the machine to a Rugby club the day before for work to be carried out. The vehicle was then loaded on to a truck to be taken back to a farm. "The machine was offloaded and the truck was taken to the farm to be repaired," said Mr Thomas. "He needed the vehicle for his work on Monday morning so he drove it along the road where it could be loaded back on to the truck." Mr Thomas said both approaching vehicles had arrived at the same spot in the road simultaneously. * * * May Ida Turner y 22, single, fruit shop manageress, was fined $15, Court costs $5, after pleading guilty to a charge of careless use. On a further charge of operating a vehicle without a current warrant of fitness, she was fined $5, Court costs $5. Senior-Sergeant Moncur told the Court that on June
14 the defendant had collided with the rear of a parked trailer while driving along Lake Terrace. In a police interview later, Turner said the vehicles had just loomed in front of her. Mr A. A. Liddell, appearing for Turner, said the mitigating factors in the case were heavy. "She was driving in heavy rain and it was hard , to see," said Mr Liddell. "There was no street light above the vehicle and there was no light on the trailer." Both vehicles . were parked at a narrow spot in the road and the defendant had struck the trailer because the driving conditions were poor and she was attemtping to keep as far to the left as possible, he said. * * * Driving with a foggcd-up frosted windscreen cost a Turangi man $20, Court costs $5. The Court heard how in the early hours of May 18, Alcide Basso, 37, tunneller , had been driving home after an evening at a friend's home when he collided with a parked car. The windscreen of his car was frosted over and Basso and his two passengersd were admitted to hospital with minor injuries. The parked car was b&dly dented. When interviewed by the police, Basso admitted that the windscreen had been fogged-up and that he should have cleaned it.
