HOLES IN ONE SEEM
EASY FOR BILL POTTER
Holes in one on the Taupo Golf Club's old course are becoming "easy" to W. A. Potter, who had his third success in less than four years last Sunday while playing in a four-ball with his brother, R. A. Potter, M. Douglas and J. K. McDougal. His hole in one was achieved at the 16th, 151 yards, where his shot into the wind and rain was hit with a No. 4 wood. Potter' s first success came in September, 1970, at the 4th hole (now the 17th) before the course layout was changed,- and
he repeated the performance at the same hole — by then the 17th — in April, 1972. The three holes in one at Taupo are the only ones of his golfmg career. * * * Driving rain throughout the afternoon made for sodden golfers and high scores during an A and B grade medal on the new course on Saturday. M. Maniapoto headed the A graders with a four-under card of 69 nett and G. Jaine won the B division with 74. Maniapoto also won the professional's stableford with 38 points, followed by J. Simon 37 and three players on 34 — M. Cook, Jaine and W. Davey. Twos were carded by A. Dance 6th, C. Jackson and J. Ballantyne 18th. * * * There was no competition play on Sunday and the professional's stableford competition was won by S. Wilson 40, with the minor placings going to B. Riley, R. Braddock 37, and L. O'Connor 36. Riley (6th) and W. Tito
(18th) scored twos on the new course and H. J. Gowling birdied the 16th on the old course. The bird's nest now totals 29 balls. * * * Tappo reversed last year's placing of first by finishing fourth in Sunday's Smythe Trophy event at Tokoroa, decided among 12-man teams from four clubs. Tokoroa finished first, followed by Mangakino, Putaruru and Taupo.
