Nine per-school centres given aid

Nine pre -school centres 1 received establishment 1 subsidies from the Department of Maori and Island I Affairs in the 1973-74 I financial year, said the I department's annual report | to Parliament. Help in Auckland went I to two kindergartens and two play centres. Others I helped were a kindergarten at Porirua East and a play I centre at each of Panguru, Gisborne, Matata and I Whangarei. To qualify there needed I to be a pre-school populaI tion of at least 30 per cent I Maori and Pacific Island I Polynesian children plus I special difficulties. Such I subsidies have been available since 1969. * The report said that in I October, 1973, Cabinet 1 approved an increase in the ^ 8 Department of Education' s I pre-school building subsidy I from $2 for $1 to $4 for $1 I and agreed to the Department of Education accept8 ing full responsibility for I providing kindergarten and | play centre buildings in 1 areas of special need. Although the DepartI ment of Maori and Island 1 Affairs will thus no longer have funds for pre-school subsidies it will continue to work with the Department of Education on all preschool projects involving * Maori and Pacific Island children, the report stated.
