Taupo's lakeweed problem. One easy but expensive solution. I Astatement from the Taupo Borough Council. I Taupo residents have argued for years about I the effect of septic tanks on lakeweed growth. I While many residents still maintain septic tanks I do not in any way contribute to the growth of I lakeweed, there is no doubt among the I scientific community that they do. I It has been estimated that if the lakeweed I femains unchecked it could form a wide fringe I around the lake within a few years. Without the lake, Taupo would lose its I popularity. With its trout, boating and scenic I attractions gone, property values would drop. I The tourist trade would fall away. .sii§y What then, is the solution? To attack the weed with sprays or chemicals, I or to physically drag it out by the roots is only I attacking the symptom of an illness. We must take away the source of the lakeweed problemI the seepage from septic tanks. 1 Taupo needs a proper sewerage reticulation system and treatment plant. . i To get it sooner Taupo residents should I invest in the Taupo Borough Council Loan now. I We will pay you 4.5% for 1 year, 4.75% for I 2 years, 5% for 3 years, 5.25% for 4 years, I 5.5% for 5 years, 5.75% for 6 years and 6.25% for I 10 to 20 years.
