Champagne meeting:
rain takes away
some sparkle
Wet weather gear was the order of the day for the Taupo Hunt's point-to-point champagne race meeting at Taupo racecourse on Saturday. The programme was completed with heavy rain for most of the day. The track was easy. A short spell of clear weather later in the day brought spectators from the shelter- of cars and umbrellas. Though (acceptances had been heavy for the equalisator meeting, scratchings were numerous in all events. The feature event of the day was the Glenvale Lemon Gin men's open flat handicap. It was won by the Rotorua horse, Barwyn, ridden by K. Gatman, in a time of 2m 14.9s over a distance of about 2000 metres.
