Wary note sounded on self — rule

Assurances from the local MP that Taupo's borough and county councils may be permitted to amalgamate .j under the proposed local government legislation mean nothing until the * move has been approved by the Local Government Commission, says the Mayor, Mr C. S. Currie. He told a meeting of the Taupo Borough Council this week that a delegation from both the county council and the borough council had met two members of the commission in Wellington for "unofficial talks." "We reiterated that amalgamation r of both councils was required and desirable provided no other tier of t government was put over us and that we became the ultimate authority governing the Taupo basin," he sald. "At the moment I can say nothing further than that."
