Building costs going up and
The average cost of building a house in Taupo last month was $15,670 — and it is expected to be more than $16,500 by December this year, the Taupo Borough Council was told on Monday night. According to the senior health and building inspector, ' Mr R. K. Ponga, the average cost of the average house built during the year ended March 31, 1974, was $14,260. "It appears that the prediction for December will be confirmed, if not exceeded," he said. The number of dwelling permits issued for the quarter ended June 30 showed a welcome increase from 26 to 38,
compared to the same period last year. "But current costs show a massive 36.2 per cent increase against that same period 12 months ago for the cost of the average home," Mr Ponga said. An increase in building activity was showing up in the statistical return, with 132 permits for $1.4 million for the first quarter of this financial year, as against 112 permits for $0.94 million for the same period last year, he said. There was a slight drop in the commercial sector and a noticeable increase in the housing sector.
