Lyric singers present popular show
The Senior Citizens' Association was recently entertained at the clubrooms by the Taupo Lyric Singers and supporting artists. The selection the choir I presented was of popular appeal and well chosen to suit the group. Most of the numbers j were from the musicals but of particular mention was ! the selection "Go'in j Home". This theme from Dvorak's New World Symj phony was well sung and j given an understanding I interpretation. The unaccompanied number "The Dashing - White Sergeant" was also worthy of comment for its lilt and vitality. The choir showed good balance and intonation throughout the remaining numbers. Dorothy Lewis had the j audience in fits of laughter , in a mime portraying an amateur dressmaker. Her performance was polished and showed obvious accomplishment in the art of mime. Particularly telling was her movement and facial expressions when finally the garment did not quite fit. Susan McCallum gave pleasing readings of an extract from "Rosamunde" and "Sonatina" by Schubert, on her violin. A newcomer to Taupo, she teaches music at Taupo College, Tokoroa and surrounding districts. Julie O'Sullivan's mezzo soprano voice has a mellow quality which welKsuited her vocal numbers, "Fat Little Fella" and "Romance", from the Desert Song. A ladies' trio comprising Julie O'Sullivan, Sister
Kathleen and Eunice Lacey, with Faith Klyen at the piano, was well received. Their voices blended pleasantly in "We'll Gather Lilacs" and Schubert's "Lullaby". Mr John Branfield used his light baritone voice with a sense of freshness and enthusiasm in both the numbers, "This Nearly was Mine" and "Lover Come Back to Me". Father Waters delighted the audience with two oboe solos: the third movement from "Sonata in G Minor" by Teleman and "Dance for a Gnome" by Franz Halford. He introduced his numbers with a short history of the oboe and its development over the centuries. On a difficult instrument to play, Father Waters mastered a good quality of tone mingled with a sense of musicianship. The choir was conducted by David Lacey. A sympathetic competence was displayed by Eunice Lacey in her accompanying of the soloists and choir. At the conclusion of the programme the association president, Mr W. S. Hasler, thanked the choir and the supporting artists for the enjoyable programme which had been presented.
