Hyde named the fireman of year
Station officer, D. J. Hyde, of the Taupo Fire Brigade, was presented with the Miss K. Hoare Memorial Trophy for the Fireman of the Year on Saturday night. The runner-up fireman of the year is sub- officer, T. N. Kavanagh. During the brigade's annual dinner for the presentations of awards, the Mayor, Mr C. S. Currie, also presented the New Zealand Fire Brigade Institute's examination diplomas to P. H. Blackford, P, L. Lee and R. McClutchie. Taupo member, Mr J.
W. Ridley, presented the New Zealand Fire Brigade's Association three-year certificates to Station Officer, R. E. Cameron and fireman, J. B. Hare. J. R. James received the five-year medal, and .the two-year silver bar was presented to P. H. Blackford and Station Officer Hyde. The president of the Institute of Fire Engineers, Mr L. Johns, presented the preliminary engineers certificates to J. B. Hare, T. N. Kavanagh and D. A. WilkinsoA. Fireman D. G. Braddock received the graduate diploma from the institute.
Taupo' s Chief Fire Officer, Mr S. K. Christensen, presented honorary membership certificates to Mr R. E. McLaughlan, Mr G. H. Twaddle, Mr J. Pellett and the Taupo St John Ambulance Associa- ' tion. Radio 1ZA announcer, Mr Ian Thompson, played his part in the evening too. He officially handed over the "Thompson Paddle" to fireman Peter Blackford. The evening, always a ' highlight of the Taupo Fire Brigade's calendar, was attended by about 100 people. A dance followed the presentations.
