Boys keen to become firemen

Six boys from Tauponui-a-Tia College visited the Taupo Fire Station during a two-day careers project last month. The boys had all expressed interest in becoming firemen when they left school. The Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Mr A. T. Maynard, told the Taupo Urban Fire Authority in a report tabled last night that they had all entered into their tasks with enthusiasm.

"The boys joined the duty watches to gain an insight into the fire service with a view to a possible career," he said. The two-day syllabus included routine work, servicing equipment, hose drills and hydrant testing. "Three of the boys considered they would like a career in the permanent service, while another preferred to be a volunteer," said Mr Maynard. "The other two were not sure."
