Beware tourism
Sir, Earlier this year "The Monitor" extracted some remarks about the island of Corsica, the effect of which was that it seemed futile to attract tourists to see the beauties of Corsica, but in the process of doing so, destroy that beauty. In the light of "The Monitor's" comments, Michael Mohi's recent Saturday night television documentary on the problems faced by the city of Rotorua seemed almost prophetic. The gist of his report was that tourism was being allowed to over-run the city, was ruining it. Mr Mohi said that in some streets in Rotorua almost every other building catered to the tourist trade, and that thereby the face of Rotorua had been completely changed for the worse. Do we want this happening in Taupo? Or is it happening already? The charms of the Lake Taupo area are internationally famous, and probably unique. We, the residents of this town, must not be selfish, but we must be wary. Let us allow everyone to . enjoy what Taupo has to offer, but we must not allow anyone to turn Taupo into another Rotorua or another Corsica.
