Roster is set up
Taupo lawyers have organised a duty solicitor roster — as directed by the Minister of Justice, Dr Fintay earlier this year. The main purpose of the scheme, which is being offered free, is for solicitors to interview people brought
before the court and to inform them of their legal rights. "All people held . in custody before their first court appearance will be visited by the duty solicitor," said the deputy registrar, Mr M. Spurr. "He will come down before the court sitting and inform the defendant of his rights.
"He may apply for an adjournment and for bail on behalf of the defendant — but the solicitor will not represent him." The duty solicitor may suggest another lawyer to vthe defendant. The roster is to be operated monthf about by each legal firm.
