ATHLETIC WINS SHIELD
Athletic has won the Garrett Shield. ; vi The side did this by desperately staving off an all-out bid by Taupo in the final quarter to save the day on Saturday. With one game to play in this final round Athletic cannot be caught — it has a lead of three points over its nearest rival, Taupo. Next Saturday Taupo will play Tihoi at Tihoi for the runners-up position. In Taupo, Athletic will play United. What a feat this is for a senior club only in its third year. It is also a oersonat triumph for coach F. Reid. He was quick to admit last Saturday that in winning the shield Athletic was very lucky in more than one of its games. In the curtain-raiser a depleted C.O.B. team was soundly defeated by Tihoi by 32-4. Both teams, knowing that they had no show in the Garrett Shield, were prepared to give some of the "good old stand bys" 3 game. A full account of both matches, plus the Taupo Maoris' fixture on Sunday will be published on Thursday.
