Envelope size is standardised

The international standardising of minimum sizes for envelopes take effect in New Zealand this month. The standards have been laid down by the Universal Postal Union of which New Zealand and most countries are members. Mechanisation and computerisation in the postal world has necessitated the introduction of world-wide consistency in envelope sizes. The minimum dimensions for envelopes, letter cards and postcards is 90mm x 140mm O'/i" x 5V2") with a tolerance of 2mm. The maximum for postcards only is to be fixed at 105mm x 148mm (43/i" x 9V4") with a 2mm tolerance. The existing overall maximum dimensions for letter post items remain unchanged. A fixed area on the address side of envelopes is

to be set aside for the affixing and cancelldtion of postage stamps. This provides for a rectangular area of 40mm with a 2mm tolerance in depth from the upper edge and 74mm in width from the right hand edge.
