County rejects hunters request
The Taupo County Council this week rejected a request by the New Zealand Deerstalkers' Association to mark with a blade or furrow the controversial northern access road to Kaimanawa Forest Park. Instead, council has accepted an offer from Anzamco, the American company which owns Poronui Station, to install a furrow just inside its property. The deerstalkers will be told of the company's offer and invited to define the road line accurately "to facilitate the marking." The council declined an Anzamco offer to mark tbe road surface with a furrow, and opted for the alternative of a furrow on Poronui property. The road in question is Tapapa Road, which runs through both Poronui and Lochinver Stations, fronting the Napier-Taupo Road. After length discussion in committee, the council called on its staff to prepare a draft by-law giving Tapapa Road the status of a public road.
