South sea jaunt for golf groups
Taupo Goif Club members will roam the South Pacific during the next five weeks in two tour parties, both led by the club's professional, Mr J. A. Clelland. The first party will leave Auckland on Saturday night for 17 days of rest and relaxation in Hawaii. The tour has been built round swimming, sunbathing, sightseeing and shopping, but the party also expects to play goif on some of the highly-rated courses on the islands. Mr Clelland will be accompanied on the tour by his wife, Mr and Mrs Lionel Holdsworth, Mr and Mrs Ernie Ellis, Mr and Mrs Les Draper (all of Taupo), Mr and Mrs Bert Eising (Napier), Mr and Mrs Bert Inteman (Palmerston North) and Mr and Mrs Ted Walsh (New Plymouth). The party will return to Auckland on the morning of July 31 and, later the same day, Mr Clelland will take the second party to Fiji and Sanioa. He will lead Messrs J. Mather, N. Hart (Taupo), B. Riley (Reporoa), Mr and Mrs Des Virtue (Wellington), Mr A. Smith (Carter- ' ton) and Mr Giff Bain (captain of the Carterton Goif Club). The tour will last slightly over two weeks, with competition in the open goif championships of Fiji and Samoa providing the highlights. The Fiji tournament will be decided over 72 holes on August 2, 3, 4 and 5, and the Samoan fixture will cover 36 holes on August 9 and 10. In previous years tour parties from the club have
included pro-am tournaments in the itinerary, but they have been deleted this year as it was considered the programme included too much goif.
All men members of the party will play in the Samoan open and all, except Mr Mather, will take part in the Fiji championship.
