4 divers salvage boat resting in 150ft of water
Despite high winds and heavy seas, a team of divers salvaged a 14 foot runabout from about 150 feet of water near Waihaha last weekend. Commercial launchman, Mr Bob Colville, whose boat Rangitira was used in the salvage, said the winds on Saturday had whipped up a swell of about eight to 10 feet. But, he said, the work had gone off with compara-
tive ease. The runabout had been submerged since its motor seized and it struck some rocks at .Queen's Birthday weekend. Four Auckland divers located the craft in about 150 feet of water, and by using the Rangitira they raised the runabout to about 60 feet. This was done. by securing a line to the bow of the submerged boat. The line was then run over the Rangitira to an anchor fixed on shore.
By moving the launch slowly forward the .craft was lifted from the lake bed and towed submerged to Kinloch. Mr Colville said the runabout was then left in about 12 feet of water while the salvers waited for the weather to clear. The final stage in the salvage operation came on Sunday when the badlyholed boat was taken ashore. The runabout was sold for salvage to a Whakatane buyer.
