SECRETED WEAPONS DETECTOR HAS PEACEFUL USE, TOO
A newly developed machine for detecting metal reinforcing rods In concrete is being tested by the Taupo Borough Council. If the council decides
to buy the German made detector it will be used for building inspection. The same model is used at overseas airports to check passengers for
concealed weapons. Taupo 's building inspector, Mr Athol Donaldson, said the detector was operated by batteries which produced a magnetic field. When the magnetic field is interfered with by a metal, the continual buzzing noise emitted by the machine alters pitch. Reinforcing is almost impossible to detect after concrete has been poured. But a quick sweep with the detector reveals the presence, or the lack, of reinforcing. Although the machine was normally used on concrete four to five inches thick, Mr Donaldson said it had a detection range of nearly 25 inches.
