Finance for sewerage bid is opposed

The Minister of Local Government, Mr May, does not support Taupo County Council moves to get subdividers to finance .sewerage reticulation in holiday areas. At last year's counties' qonference, a Taupo remit was passed calling for contributions from subdividers to be held in a trust fund for future provision of A sewerage reticulation.

This would be similar to the present reserve fund- ^ Landowners subdividing, in _ holiday areas where therp was no sewerage system would be required to pay into a fund for a future scheme. At present, subdividers can only be required to contribute to a scheme which will be in operation within three years. Councillors were told this week that the Minister considered adequate legislative powers already existed for councils to require subdividers to contribute toward sewerage schemes. Although he agreed that the present three year provisions limited the extent to which legislation could be used, Mr May said these were being reviewed in conjunction with the second stage of the Local Government Bill. The county chairman, Mr J. M. Black, said the council would now have to "keep its ear to the
