A Taupo family narrowly escaped serious injury last week when a 40 foot pine tree plunged through a fence on to their Koha Road property. Mrs J. M. Sullivan said that in the early hours of Thursday morning the family had been awoken by a loud crashing noise. "It seemed as if the world were caving in," she said. "All was quiet for a few minutes and then we realised what it was." The falling tree hit the roof of the house, buckling a section of guttering and scratching paint before grazing the side of a caravan — a bedroom for Mrs Sullivan's two daughters. She said the owner of the property on which the tree had stood pruned branches off onfe side last year. Another pine tree fell on the same property last year. The latest fallen tree is to be sawn up for firewood.
