June mild but wet

June was a mild, wet month, says Taupo man Mr W. de Bont. Only six days throughout the month were really cold with a maximum temperature below 10 degrees •celsius. j The coldest day was June 16 when the maximum temperature only reached 6.2 degrees. June 15 recorded the highest maximum temperature of 16 degrees. The coldest June on record was in 1967 when the average mean temperature was 5.2 degrees. The mildest June was recorded in 1971 with a mean average temperature of 10.2 degrees. Frost occurred on 14 days last month. The heaviest — 15

degrees — was experienced at the nursery near the old aerodrome. The heaviest at Rainbow Point was 6.7 degrees on June 20 and 21. At the control gates, 9.1 degrees was recorded. In June, 1967, there were 22 days with frost. Total rainfall for the month was well above average. At Rainbow Point it reached 134.7mm, at the control gates 144.8mm, and at the nursery 147.5mm. The wettest day was June 15 with 67.2mm — nearly twice as much as the previous maximum in June, 1962. Most of the rain fell overnight but the level of Lake Taupo did not rise substantially because very

cold days followed the downpour. On June 27, 39.3mm were measured and this total also exceeded the previous highest rainfall for June. The wettest June was recorded in 1968 when 186.5mm fell in 20 days. The total hours of sun was well below average over the last 10 years. Five days had no sun and four had less than one hour. There were seven days with more than seven hours of sun. The sunniest day was June 19 with 8.8 hours. The sunniest June was recorded in 1972 with 145 hours while the dullest occurred in 1968 with only 78 hours. June was not a particularly windy month although there were a few windy days.
