Driving course ordered

John Fleming Montgomery, 49, optician, of Lower Hutt, was fined S60, Court costs $5 and ordered to take a defensive driving course after pleading guilty to a charge of careless use of a motor vehicle. Montgomery appeared before Mr P. J. Trapski, SM, in the Taupo Magistrate's Court. The Court heard how Montgomery had been driving on the western bays access road on April 12 when he pulled out to overtake a group of motor cychsts. Before he had time to complete the manoeuvre a car appeared in the other direction. Montgomery swerved to the left and collided with one of the motor cyclists. Representing Montgomery, Mr A. A. Liddell said that as the defendant went to overtake the group the motor cyclists sped up before the movement could be completed. "You were caught on the horns of a dilemma," Mr » Trapski told Montgomery.
