Squash club 'embarrassed' by big entry
More than 200 entries were received by the Taupo Squash Club for the Leopard Open Tournament which begins tonight. But said club captain, Steve Jacobs, more than 100 players had unfortunately to be balloted out. "Even with our third court, we can only cater for 108 entries," he said. "Because of the high grading of the entries only 13 Taupo players have been accepted." Entrants have come from a wide area, with large numbers expected from the various Auckland and Napier clubs. The tournament is being run in seven grades — four men's and three ladies. Play will begin at the Taupo squash courts tonight and will finish on Sunday evening. The club is to hold a social on the Saturday night, with a bubbly hour, followed by a dance.
Mr Jacobs has a word of consolation for all locals balloted out of the tournament: "In two weeks we will be having a visit from the . Havelock North, Taumarunui and Mount Maunganui clubs."
