Taupo's lakeweed problem.One easy but expensive solution. A statement from the Taupo Borough Council. Taupo residents have argued for years about the effeet of septic tanks on lakeweed growth. While many residents still maintain septic tanks do not in any way contribute to the growth of lakeweed, there is no doubt among the scientific community that they do. It has been estimated that if the lakeweed remains unchecked it could form a wide fringe around the lake within a few years. Without the lake, Taupo would lose its popularity. With its trout, boating and scenic attractions gone, property values would drop. The tourist trade would fall away. What then, is the solution? To attack the weed with sprays or chemicals, or to physically drag it out by the roots is only attacking the symptom of an illness. We must take away the source of the lakeweed problem - the seepage from septic tanks. »* Taupo needs a proper sewerage reticulation system and treatment plant. ■ To get it sooner Taupo residents should invest in the Taupo Borough Council Loan now. We will pay you 4.5% for 1 year, 4.75% for 2 years, 5% for 3 years, 5.25% for 4 years, 5.5% for 5 years, 5.75% for 6 years and 6.25% for 10 to 20 years.
